Crop Over is this weekend in Barbados and, with Trinis invading the little island just north-east of us and Machel Montano being the poster face of the festival, more local bands and all-inclusive party promoters are participating in the event. Many moons ago, Trinidad-born designer/bandleader Gywneth Squires ruled the roost in Crop Over, winning countless Band of the Year titles.
In recent years, the carnival has been graced by the likes of Keith McLean, Berlin Mendoza, Senior Gomez, Stephen Derek, “Big Mike†Antoine, Ian McKenzie, Tribe, Islandpeople Mas and this year, for the first time, Ronnie & Caro. Ronnie & Caro, Carnival’s most successful medium band this past decade, is producing a section (Breadfruit) in Betty West’s band. Before returning home, Ronnie & Caro heads to Grenada for Spice Mas next Friday to produce even more Made in T&T mas. Tonight, Barbados will select a new calypso monarch when its Pic-o-De-Crop final is held at Waterford. Grand Kadooment (Parade of the Bands) will be held on Monday, from the National Stadium to Spring Garden Highway.
